Bookpedia vs Delicious Library.

I'm not actually supposed to be posting, because it's work hours here, but I've been working nonstop (except for 30 minutes break for lunch) since this morning, I figured I owe myself 30 minutes of downtime.

Ok, I actually promised a review of the Pedias last weekend and I wasn't able to do so because I was having too much fun cataloguing my books. I'm going to do so now -- but I'll start with Bookpedia first.

Bookpedia is actually the main application I researched thoroughly among all the other Pedias. I mentioned comparing it to Delicious Library in a previous post, but I also compared it to Readerware and Booxter as well. It came down to a comparison between DL and Bookpedia (I didn't like Readerware interface and when I tried Booxter, I found its scanning extremely wonky). I chose Bookpedia over DL because of the following reasons:
  • DL only uses Amazon US to search for item information, whereas Bookpedia has access to international search sites and library servers.
  • There are reports that DL considerably slows down to a crawl when you have inputted a lot of content already. This will likely happen to my iBook since I have plenty of books, games, CDs, and DVDs; plus my iBook is already over 3 years old (even if RAM and hard drive space is maxed out, it will probably get really slow since I'd be using DL 1). No thanks.
  • Bookpedia seems to have more customizable export features than DL. I say "seems" because I haven't actually tried DL, since the newest one (DL 2) doesn't support Tiger anymore. (Even if it did, I still wouldn't choose it because of the points mentioned here.) I already tweaked the export to excel feature, and export to web as well. Quite easily done.
  • The developers of Bookpedia is much more responsive to customer queries than the one of DL. I consistently come across comments and testimonials where issues with Bookpedia were addressed after only one or two days. I also saw a handful of posts from Conor, top dog of Bruji, even replying to blogs and addressing negative issues personally. On the other hand, I found a quite arrogant post (check out the comments field and make sure to enable viewing of guest posts at the bottom of the page) from the developer Will Shipley himself that just turned me off totally from the application. Oh, and Mr. Conor posted there too.
Some people mention that with DL, you can already catalogue EVERYTHING you may want for $40, while you need to buy separate software ($18 each) for books, CDs, DVDs, and games if you buy Bruji's software. I don't find this a deterrent though -- I think this is one reason why the app runs much faster -- plus, if you are an avid collector of only one type of all these things, you only need to buy that application. I bought all four for the bundle price of $49 because I have extensive libraries of all those things, but bookworms, movie buffs, music lovers, and game masters need only buy the pedia of their choice for much less.

Ok, gotta go. I have to work now. ;-)

blogging during work hours?????? i am shocked!!!! (LOL)

fortunately i never had those problems with DL. i had tons of everything and i didn't experience the slowing down. i only had to ask for customer help once when i couldn't find my license key and i had to re-install. i got a quick and nice response.

the only extra feature i actually use in DL is sync-ing it with my iPod so i bring my library with me and can check if i already have a copy of anything.

enjoy your Pedias (they sound like doctors for children)

Hahaha. :-)

Well, sweetie, your Lucy is much faster than my Ally. And Morningstar can run rings around Ally as well. Do you have DL for Tiger or Leopard?

Bookpedia can also sync to iPod. It's great now that I have my iPod touch. I haven't tried the syncing yet but I'll do so after I've finished cataloguing. It will be quite useful as I've already found that I have doubles in my library!

i got DL way before Leopard came out. and now i'm using it with Leopard. i didn't note any change. i don't remember re-installing or downloading an upgrade.

my library is now tiny with only 300+ books (and many of those are graphic novels).

but my DVD library grew. partly due to the influence of having a home theater. :P

:D
