The End of HD-DVD?

A few days ago, I happened upon an article (I couldn't find the original article I read anymore, sorry, bad blogger, I know) on the Internet saying that US consumer electronics giant Best Buy is going to start recommending Blu-Ray DVDs to its customers. It would still sell HD-DVDs, but it would start prominently featuring Blu-Ray. In a world where the average consumer is NOT tech-savvy, the store clerk's sales pitch may be the critical factor in what gets bought. Apparently, this announcement came hours after online video rental service Netflix that it would exclusively stock Blu-Ray discs in its high-def category.

Then a couple of days or so later, I read this here article (note, registration may be required) that Wal-Mart announced it will no longer be stocking HD-DVD players and discs, and current store supplies of these items are expected to last only until June.

Ok, fine. Big blow, but not out of the woods yet. I've even found an article on CNet Asia talking about five reasons not to buy a Blu-Ray player yet.

But then, today, I saw this article, which reported that Toshiba has decided to halt HD-DVD by next month. Poor Toshiba. Tsk, tsk, tsk. I wonder how Microsoft Xbox 360 will fare with this news? *evil grin*

Yes, you guessed it. I'm in the Blu-Ray camp, chiefly because two of my favorite tech brands are supporting that format (Apple and Sony). I'm not familiar about which movie studios are supporting Blu-Ray, but I would guess that Disney might be (seeing that Steve Jobs sits on its board, thought I think that development came after everyone has already announced which format they'd be supporting).
